Shelfmark is a fast-moving startup building custom machine vision systems for automated visual inspection in manufacturing. Our systems help factories catch defects before they ship, using real-time image capture and machine learning.
We’re looking for a well-rounded engineer to help us build the software infrastructure that powers our deployed systems. You’ll work across the stack — from backend services and deployment pipelines to the edge devices running at client sites. This role is ideal for someone who thrives on variety and enjoys building robust, scalable systems that span from cloud to hardware.
You’ll collaborate closely with our ML and software engineers to support live products in the field. The focus is on infrastructure, backend development, and devops — with a strong secondary emphasis on managing and scaling the systems that run on the edge.
What You'll Do
• Own and maintain our Jira environment — backlog grooming, epic creation, roadmap updates, and ceremony facilitation.
• Work with engineering to clarify requirements, define user stories, and write high-quality acceptance criteria without needing constant technical hand-holding.
• Run lightweight Scrum ceremonies (stand-ups, planning, grooming, retros as needed) ideal for a ~4-6 person engineering team.
• Translate high-level business and customer needs into structured product work, ensuring ideas flow through a consistent process (Feature Ideas → Backlog → Epic → Delivery).
• Work closely with leadership to prioritize work based on customer impact, feasibility, and company goals.
• Proactively identify dependencies, risks, and blockers across software, hardware, and vision engineering.
• Ensure projects deliver on time by tracking progress, clarifying requirements, and keeping communication tight across business and engineering.
What We’re Looking For
• Someone technically fluent — not an engineer, but capable of understanding system architecture, APIs, software/hardware interactions, and computer vision concepts at a high level.
• Experience as a Product Owner, Scrum Master, or Technical PM in a startup or similarly fast-paced environment.
• Strong ability to write clear user stories, define acceptance criteria, and break work down into digestible units without needing significant input from engineering.
• A structured, organized thinker with exceptional communication skills who can bring order to ambiguity.
• Comfortable juggling many priorities and making tradeoffs in a resource-constrained environment
• Bias toward action — you move quickly, unblock teams, and keep momentum high.
• Familiarity with Jira or similar systems and a passion for process that is lightweight, pragmatic, and moves the team forward.
• A collaborative, low-ego partner who can work productively with engineering, leadership, and customers.
Compensation: Product Owner will receive a competitive salary and healthcare benefits package, and would be considered for early employee equity compensation.
Location: The ideal candidate would be located in Pittsburgh, PA and willing to co-locate in person in the company’s Uptown office.
